Good evening. You may remember a couple of months back I mentioned how MMR was no longer "registered" because it apparently was not Y2K15 or
16 compliant. You may also remember me mentioning that MBAG and MDIST
had gone up past echomail day 9999 and did not roll back to 0000,
making them no longer work properly.
Well, now I have noticed something with GT 19 and GT 20. The (v)ersion menu command gives the proper date and, apparently, messages exported
by bgnet and fidogate also carry the correct date.
But if you are reading messages online with GT, messages from 2017 show up as if they were entered in "1917"! I checked, and messages from
2016 and before are correct. So it has something to do with this year
in particular and, I am guessing, future years.
As I have recently been watching the PBS special about how WWI was 100 years ago, being returned to 1917 is a little disturbing. I need to be sure to get my flu shot this year!
Also, I was under the impression that Tom Watt was only going to do a "telnet version" for GT 20 (no email or website interface). I could have worked around that, but the QK (QWK Mail) utility would not process REP packets. I could've created a pre-pack mode workaround with the PDQWK door, but would have to use pre-pack mode...since the PDQWK door did not have fossil driver support, and doubt that either Paul Ratcliffe or
Dave Liquorice are still around...even though I have a registered copy
of the PDQWK door. Had it had fossil driver support, I could've used it instead.
I am not certain that fossil driver support would help or not. I was under the impression that the door did work over telnet. It does open
up but, as it uses DSZ for all of its file transfers... I have never
been able to get it to work, whether I am telneting to my OS2/VMODEM
box or to my linux box. So, it is actually useless except by dial-up.
Once upon a time, I was able to at least offer X/Ymodem and a few other internal protocols over telnet, but anymore they are not reliable
enough. I don't know if it is the connection being fast or "noisy" or what over telnet, but once a packet gets dropped the protocols are not able to recover like they might over a noisy phone line.
As SBBS has ftp and www servers, I plan to offer files over those
routes, and QWK mail via ftp, and give up on doing it with GT over telnet. It is finally starting to show its age. It has been 23 years, so I guess it was time. :)

When Bill Watts originally bought the rights to GT Power from Paul Meiners, he had high hopes for it, including email, a website
interface, telnet, FTP, etc. But, sadly, none of that materialized.
At least I can still carry the non-GT Sysop echoes over here via QWK Networking...and the BBS is celebrating its 25th birthday/silver anniversary today, May 1.

In my mind, when Mike started His BBS You were the Old Timer He learned from.
I still remember You Both experimenting with using the internet to transfer GT Mail Packets.
You All DID GOOD!

Except my board was 29 in March. :) I learned a lot from Terry
McFalls and Tom Currie, who both ran GT boards in the Louisville area
at that time.

Back when I was near Louisville, I had it pretty good in that regard.
I eventually had a direct (dial-up) UUCP feed and my own domain... It became a little more difficult to do after I moved.
