Funny, I was trying to explain that to someone the other day. There
are portions of the US that do not change. I tried to explain to them
that they were better off for it. One of my reasons was that they always
stay the same in relation to GMT.

They countered with "but if the whole World changes together, we all are
still the same relative to each other." I then informed them that Europe
moves foward at a different time, as does South America (where they are actually moving back) and other areas. They either did not believe me,
or their definition of "World" only includes North America. I tend to
believe the latter. ;-)

I am also convinced that they believe that those of us who live in DST
areas do everything an hour later during DST. I could not convince them
that the Sun stays up an hour later in relation to bed time.

I much prefer having DST but I think Kentucky is somewhat further south
than the 55N line that I'm on. The further north you go the bigger the
effect. In mid winter, without DST, it would be pretty much dark by 1500
here.

Many people have trouble with "time" but unfortunately I think you
belief is probably correct.

Here, DST only affects what time it is during the Summer. Basically, it
stays light out until after 2100, during the peak of Summer. Winter,
we all fall back to Standard Time, which used to be the only "type" of
time we had. So, during the darkest part of Winter, it starts getting
dark between 1700-1800, like it always did before.

I guess I don't understand the benefit here of having the Sun stay out an
hour later in relation to bed time, along with the heat it provides, during
the hottest part of the year. ;-) During Winter, I think it would make
more sense.

DOH! We don't have DST in the winter either, what time was it when I
wrote that? They did try DST in winter about 30 years ago, blooming
'orrible dark mornings. I Think some of the reasoning was that in the
morning drivers in the rush hour are more alert thus able to deal with
the dark conditions better. Rather than dealing with a dark conditions
in the evening rush hour after a days work.

It doesn't get really dark up here in the summer, deep twilight is the
best it can manage without cloud cover. Always a glow to the northen
horizon.

We go from about 6hrs daylight/18hrs darkness to the opposite between
winter and summer. I don't like mid winter it's too dark for too long, I
think I suffer from a little bit of SAD.

I think I do, too. I believe I also suffer from "Summer SAD," which affects people just the opposite, during the longest, hottest days of Summer. I
think, though, that it is not caused by too much Sun (for me, anyway), but instead being so tired from the heat & lack of sleep.

They tell Summer SAD people to keep their shades drawn (to help keep the
Sun & heat out), and to keep their homes a little darker. <shrugs>

I saw where Indiana voted to be all Daylight Time next year
(2006)...so, now it's apparently just Arizona and Hawaii that don't
observe that.
