I think Mike was in GT Power before I was. I started with GT 15.50, and
ran 17, 18, and 19 (I somehow missed version 16).

I started with 13 and 14.03, then was a beta tester by the time that 15.00
came out. My board was not online all the time, though. I had to take it
down for a year or so around 1991 because I could not afford the two phone lines. So, I ran a "point" until I got a second line again.

Before setting up 13, for a brief while I ran a board with software called Collosus (sp?). It was easy to set up, but there was not much support for it in my area as no one else ran it. I am not even sure if it was capable of connecting to any networks or not.

It's a lot cheaper than doing it via dial-up. If there was way to use
the VoIP data line (like a Fax Modem, say with MagicJack), I'd look into reimplementing faxes and dial-up capabilities to the BBS...but, I don't
know if that can be done. However, I understand that the phone companies
are converting all the old analog lines to digital by 2020, if not before.

I have a MagicJack for voice. It is not too good with data, however there
are other such VOIP products that allow the user to configure which voice protocols are used. Supposedly, some folks on the 'nets' are able to get pretty reliable connections with those.

log into GT that way. Have never got around to trying to figure out how

I have both MagicJack for voice, but set it for "voice mail". The deal
is in my laptop...with the deal for MagicJack Plus (for fax modem) in the desktop...both under Windows 7 32-bit. With the voice line, I had to
disconnect the phone, as I was getting calls at all hours (telemarketers, etc.). So now, if they want to talk to me, they leave a voice mail, and
I call them back, as I have unlimited long distance to the contiguous 48 states, via my smartphone through Straight Talk.

I am also using the Classic Phone Tools program that I had with the
US Robotics 56K External Fax Modem CD...and that's what "answers" the
fax modem.

But, I would be interested in hearing how Sysops are using VoIP deals
like MagicJack for modem calls. After all, $40 a year for each line (one
is for voice, and the other for fax modem)...$80 total...beats nearly
$60 or more a month for a "vanilla phone line". But, I understand that
the phone companies are converting all the analog lines to digital.

I was able to set it up through Virtual Advanced. But, I had to use an external FTelnet link to get into it...since I had problems with getting
the previous FTelnet deal to work.

Go to www.ftelnet.ca -- click on the link on the right that notes
Embedded FTelnet. Answer the questions, set up the URL link, and you
are good to go.

has not been too reliable here, so I have never converted the BBS over to
one. Are you saying that you have a version that works well with FAX?

Too bad. I really enjoyed running GT Power. And, had I had the knowledge of programming (especially C, which I understand GT was written in (a large
amount of it), as well as the financial resources, I would've bought the rights to it and developed it. Unfortunately, it was not to be. I know each
BBS software has its own brand of neat features, but GT had a few that I
really liked. These were "stacking commands", and the way Echomail was
handled (it went to the moderators system first, before going out to others).

I would ask in one of the other sysop or BBSing echos. I just know
that MJ has not been too reliable here, so I have never converted the
BBS over to one. Are you saying that you have a version that works
well with FAX?

Well, with the software I'm using (Classic Phone Tools, which I got with
the US Robotics 56K External Fax Modem), it has answered the modem. But, I think most of the calls have been voice telemarketers. Obviously, when they
get a fax modem squealing in their ear, they realize they're not going to
get to "do their spiel" (too bad <G>).
